Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.)
The C.P.M. Program
The Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) Program – a product of the Institute for Supply Management, Inc. (formerly NAPM)- is designed for experienced purchasing and supply managers. Courses focus on managerial and leadership skills, plus a variety of specialized functions (including sourcing analysis, supply and inventory management, and forecasting) intended to enhance the value of procurement and supply management within an organization. Participants in the C.P.M. Program will cover the operational aspects of the purchasing and supply function, such as identifying requirements, preparing solicitations and agreements, negotiations, technology, quality, and maintaining relationships.
These courses earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for completion. Those seeking the C.P.M. credential will need to meet requirements of the ISM, which include successfully passing four professional exams. For additional information on C.P.M., visit the web site: www.ism.ws
The Purchasing Process - Module One in C.P.M. Series
This exam prep course (CPM 7001) covers the fundamentals of the purchasing and supply management and will prepare participants to take the C.P.M. exam, Module 1, offered through the Institute of Supply Management. Registration for the exam is separate from the review course and is explained in the exam registration link toward the top left of this page.
Objectives include:
- Learn and understand the critical elements of the requisition process, cost analysis and management, sourcing and supplier evaluation, the competitive bidding process, legal issues, and sample contract terms and conditions.
- Learn operational aspects of the purchasing and supply function such as identifying requirements, preparing solicitations and agreements, evaluating supplier performance, contract execution.
The Supply Management Environment - Module Two in C.P.M. Series
This exam prep course (CPM 7002) covers the strategic importance of purchasing and the effect of the rapidly changing environment on the profession. It prepares participants to take the C.P.M. exam, Module 2, offered through the Institute of Supply Management. Registration for the exam is separate from the review course and is explained in the exam registration link toward the top left of this page.
Objectives include:
- Learn and understand the impact of globalization and time compression, e-business, and resource planning systems which are the trends transforming purchasing strategy.
- Learn operational aspects of the purchasing and supply management function such as preparing for and conducting negotiations, information technology for the supply management professional, quality issues, internal and external relationships.
Supply Management for Value Enhancement -Module Three in C.P.M. Series
This exam prep course (CPM 7003) covers the critical issues involved with outsourcing/privatization, inventory management, cost avoidance/cost reduction programs, forecasting, lease-buy and net present value analysis, developing strategies based on long-and short-term market forecasts are included.Registration for the exam is separate from the review course and is explained in the exam registration link toward the top left of this page.
Objectives include:
- Understand the key issues and considerations in outsourcing and privatization decisions
- Know the role of purchasing in lease-buy analysis
- Recognize the value of inventory management in today's workplace
- Identify purchasing value enhancement programs such as value engineering, standardization, and cost avoidance/cost reduction programs
- Understand the value of ESI (Early Supplier Involvement)
- Discuss development of sourcing strategies and forecasting
Management - Module Four in C.P.M. Series
Solid management and visionary leadership are critical to the success of purchasing. This exam prep course (CPM 7004) underscores the importance of strategic planning; applying key theories of motivation; major issues in selection, recruitment, retention; and continuing education of purchasing personnel. It is highly recommended for current or emerging leaders in the supply management field. Registration for the exam is separate from the review course and is explained in the exam registration link toward the top left of this page.
Objectives include:
- Relate strategic planning and budgeting processes to purchasing
- Discuss issues associated with leading and managing; applying key theories of motivation, management, and the use of teams in purchasing
- Review policies, procedures and forms used by purchasing
- Discuss issues related to purchasing organizational structure
- Understand methods of monitoring, evaluating and reporting on purchasing performance
