What is the ESL Instructor Fast Track Training?
ESL Instructor Fast Track Training is an 8-week, instructor-facilitated, online course for new and current Adult ESL professionals who lack a formal training in the area of English language teaching and learning.
Who will benefit from this training?
The course is designed for new, novice or experienced adult educators who lack formal ESL teacher training and need an overview in the learning and teaching of English in adulthood. This training is best suited for instructors in Adult ESL literacy programs offered through community-based literacy organizations, religious institutions, community colleges or any other state-funded program.
What will I get from this training?
The training consists of a course orientation and five instructional modules designed to give a perspective on essential components of Adult ESL instruction so that participants can:
* explore their beliefs about teaching and learning,
* develop a knowledge about how languages are learned and acquired,
* build an awareness of ESL pedagogy and lesson planning and
* discover tools used to continue self-directed professional development.
How does the training work?
The course uses the online learning management system (LMS), Moodle. After enrollment, participants obtain a CPCC username and password and log in. During the first week, participants complete an online orientation and introduce themselves to their facilitator and colleagues. Each Monday, the facilitator makes a new course module (i.e. unit) available to the class. Participants watch introductory videos, listen to mini-lectures, complete tasks, and demonstrate basic understanding of the content by taking short quizzes. Through guided discussions, participants demonstrate their ability to synthesize and apply core concepts in the course while building a learning community with other participants. Dialogue journals with the facilitator allow individual participants to address their particular areas of interest and goals throughout the training. A final exam and retrospective activities conclude the training. Each module will take between three and seven hours, depending on each participant's background and familiarity with the content. A certificate is sent via regular mail to all who have fulfilled the requirements of the course.
What computer skills do I need to have in order to complete this course successfully?
Participants should be comfortable with the process of authentication (i.e. creating a username and password) when logging into a secure website. They should be able to click on hyperlinks that direct them to files or websites and know how to use their internet browser at the top of the page to return to the original page. They should know basic symbols and commands for playing back media (i.e. forward, pause, play) and how to click and scroll down on a page both horizontally and vertically. When in doubt, they should be comfortable writing and receiving emails to seek further assistance.
Can I start the course late?
Registrations will only be accepted up to seven days after the class start date.
Will I need a login and password to access the course?
Yes, you will be assisted in setting these up at enrollment.
