According to the Human Resource Certification Institute's website, www.hrci.org/certification, if you have at least two (2) to four (4) years of exempt-level Human Resources experience (such as a generalist, manager, director, etc.), you may want to consider preparing for the national PHR (Professional in Human Resources) exam, or the SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) exam, assuming you have a minimum of six (6) to eight (8) years exempt-level HR experience.  If you are unsure what is meant by exempt-level work experience, please visit the US Department of Labor's website at www.dol.gov.

Course Description

The SHRM® Learning System Course is designed to provide you with an overview of key areas in human resource management. Materials include six modules that correspond to the six functional areas, responsibilities, and associated knowledge as defined by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). The program is offered in cooperation with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) as study material for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification examinations administered by HRCI.

Besides being a powerful tool to assist you in preparing for the PHR or SPHR certification exams, the SHRM® Learning System Course also provides professional development for you and your HR Department. The course provides a solid foundation for managing the HR challenges you face in today's demanding work environment; it supplies a current reference of HR practices, broadens the perspective of functional specialists, and strengthens individual competencies and productivity.

Who Should Attend?

The course is specifically designed for managers and staff with experience in general management or human resource management:

  • HR practitioners seeking professional development to enhance or advance their career

  • Experienced managers who are new to the human resource field

  • Mid-level managers pursuing career change or promotion

  • HR professionals planning to take the PHR or SPHR certification exams

  • HR professionals pursuing a broad overview of human resource management

  • HR specialists desiring a broader understanding of HR management

  • PHR-level professionals seeking to “upgrade” their certification to SPHR.

The ideal candidate for either the PHR or SPHR exam is someone with the breadth and depth of HR generalist knowledge and experience.  Certification becomes a public recognition or professional achievement -- both within and outside of the profession.

Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE) offers a 36-hour comprehensive preparation review course for the PHR/SPHR exam (course code BUX 7910).  While the materials are the same for both designations, on the exam administered by the HRCI (Human Resource Certification Institute), there are different percentages devoted to each functional area on the exam.  The materials (SHRM Learning System) covers the following six functional areas:

  • Strategic Management
  • Workforce Planning and Employment
  • Human Resource Development
  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Employee and Labor Relations
  • Occupational Health, Safety and Security

The PHR/SPHR Preparation Review course, offered through Corporate and Continuing Education, provides an overview of key areas in human resources management to better prepare HR professionals for the national exam.  Participants receive the latest edition of the SHRM Learning System to assist them in preparing for the exam, as well as providing general professional development.  While this course is designed as a preparation review course for the PHR or SPHR exam, participants may take the course without necessarily taking the exam.  CPCC awards certificates with 3.6 CEU's (continuing education units) for participants who successfully complete the course.

The Society of Human Resources (SHRM) and Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) are two separate organizations; however, SHRM follows the HRCI body of knowledge outline in creating the SHRM Learning System.  This course will in no way guarantee or ensure success on the HRCI exam.

BUX 7910:  Human Resources (PHR/SPHR) Certification Preparation:  course typically meets once per week for three hours over 11 weeks.  Since HRCI administers exams twice per year (early May and early December), we offer the preparation courses during our spring and fall semesters, so the course is completed shortly before the exam is administered.  The cost of this 36-hour course is $795 and includes the latest version of the SHRM Learning System, which will be provided at the first session.  There is an additional $4 CAPS fee per course (for all CCE courses).
