Manufacturing Leaders' Academy

by Lorraine Blahnik last modified 08/14/2009

Do you face any of these issues?

  • Does it take too long to make the transition from individual contributor to leader?
  • Are new leaders overwhelmed by the higher-level responsibilities they now have?
  • Do leaders fail to help team members understand how their work contributes to the organization’s success?

The Manufacturing Leaders’ Academy is designed to support the local manufacturing industry with training for new emerging leaders and existing leaders.

The manufacturing sector in the Charlotte region employs 167,000 workers and remains a major industry in the local economy. A Centralina Economic Development Commission (CEDC) report states that up to 50% of skilled manufacturing workers will be eligible to retire by 2015. The ability of the region’s manufacturing firms to remain competitive will depend on how quickly those businesses can prepare the “next generation” of manufacturing leaders.

In Industry Week’s “Small Steps Make a Huge Difference When Promoting Manufacturing Careers” on Aug. 18, 2008, the statistics are echoed nationwide: “With half of the nation’s 14 million manufacturing workers nearing retirement, 90% of America’s manufacturers say they are struggling to find qualified workers.”

“Strong leadership is the backbone of an organization. Leaders create the vision, support the strategies, and are the catalyst for developing the individual bench strength to move the organization forward. Yet leadership can be an elusive characteristic, and developing leaders to their full potential remains one of the great challenges for organizations today.”

The Ken Blanchard Companies research report "Critical Leadership Skills."

According to the Critical Leadership Skills report by The Ken Blanchard Companies, 1,400 leaders, managers, and executives shared their views by survey on most critical leadership skills including:

Communication/listening:  43%
Effective management skills:  17%
Emotional intelligence and empathy:  15%
Values and integrity:  8%
Vision:  6%
Empowerment:  6%

CPCC's Manufacturing Leaders’ Academy will launch in January 2009.

Our launch will focus on Emerging Leaders. Training and developing the next generation of leaders will be a key strategy for the future success in the manufacturing industry.

In a report by DDI, “2004 -2005 Super Human Resources: Realizing Manufacturing Excellence Through Better People” findings from “Industry Week/Manufacturing Performance Institute (MPI) 2004-2005 Census of Manufacturers” data shows that dramatic returns can be realized by investing in six specific human resource programs: recruiting and hiring, performance management, employee development and training, leader/supervisor development and training, teaming, safety and health programs. In fact, at plants where all of those programs were highly effective, the performance was stronger in a number of benchmark areas including:

    • Lower labor turnover rates
    • Higher gross profit margins
    • More return from capital investment
    • Higher productivity and efficiency from operations and workers
    • Greater likelihood of achieving world class manufacturing status
